Morris K. Udall Scholarship
Application Deadline: January 26, 2009
The Morris K. Udall scholarships provide up to $5,000, or the cost of tuition,
fees, books, room and board, whichever is less, to sophomores and juniors who
have demonstrated a strong academic record and outstanding potential for leadership.
Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit to two groups of students; those
who study the environment or related fields, and those with Native American
or Native Alaskan backgrounds who study health care or tribal public policy.

Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be a US citizen
- Have a 3.5
GPA or higher
- Be a UNC student with sophomore or junior standing in
the academic year 2008-2009.
- Be either studying
the environment or related fields or a native American or native Alaskan and
studying health care or tribal policy
Selection Process
Submit the following materials to the Office of Distinguished
Scholarships, 225 Graham Memorial Hall, CB #3510, Chapel Hill, NC, 27599-3510. The application
is due Monday, January 26, 2009.
- Five completed copies of the Nominee Information Form
which can be downloaded from the web.
- Five copies of a 800 word essay discussing a significant
public speech, legislative act, or public policy statement
by Congressman Udall and its impact on the applicant's field
of interest and career goals.
- One official UNC transcript. (You may request, from the
Registrar, at no cost, an internal transcript, to be sent
to our office in 225 Graham Memorial. You will need to do this 5 days prior to the deadline. )
- One copy each of three letters of recommendation.The Office of Distinguished Scholarships suggests applicants provide this letter, or a version of it, to all those whom you ask to write recommendations. Your
letters may be sent directly to 225 Graham Memorial, or
you can turn them in with your application. The letters
must arrive in a sealed envelope signed across the seal.
- The campus selection committee completes initial screening
of applicants. Nominees selected by the panel will be
asked to revise their applications. Completed applications
will then be sent to the Udall Review Committee at the national level..
- Recipients are announced in April.
