The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, one of the world's leading think tanks specializing in international affairs, conducts programs of research, discussion, publication and education in international relations and U.S. foreign policy. The Junior Fellows Program at the Carnegie Endowment is designed to provide a substantive work experience for students who have a serious career interest in the area of international affairs. Students will be hired to work at the Carnegie Endowment on a full-time basis for a period of one year. Carnegie Junior Fellows work as research assistants to the Endowment's senior associates. No one will be considered who has started graduate studies.

Eligibility

  1. Applicants must be nominated by an official of their university.
  2. Applications are accepted only from graduating college seniors or individuals who have graduated within the past academic year. No one will be considered who has started graduate studies.
  3. Applicants should have completed a significant amount of course work in international affairs, political science, economics, history or Russian studies.
  4. The selection process for the junior Fellows Program is very competitive. Accordingly, applicants should be of high academic quality; typically a cumulative GPA of 3.6 or higher is required.

Selection Process

All applications must be coordinated through the UNC Office of Distinguished Scholarships to be considered eligible for the Carnegie.

Please review the following documents, including the application form and questions:

By the UNC Campus Deadline, please submit to the Office of Distinguished Scholarships, 225 Graham Memorial, CB# 3510, Chapel Hill, NC, 27599-3510, one original (single sided, no staples) by: November 20, 2009.

Please submit the following:
  1. 1-2 page resume or background statement (must include telephone number, address, extra-curricular activities and work experience).
  2. Application Form (linked to above).
  3. Two letters of recommendations (at least one of which is from a Professor in the student's major department).
    1. These should be addressed to "The Rhodes Selection Committee". We recommend you give your reference this letter when making the request.
  4. Transcript of undergraduate records (transcript may be unofficial).
  5. Essay (one page or less) on why the student would like to become a junior fellow.
  6. An essay of no more than three typewritten, double-spaced pages on one of five topics. These topics are not necessarily indicative of the issues that Junior Fellows will research at the Carnegie Endowment, but they are intended to test skills in analysis, logic, and written expression. The essays should be thought pieces, not research papers.
